How to Make Curtains
Learning how to make curtains will allow you freedom of design in color, length, and style. If you’re looking to change up decor in a major way, new curtains can give a whole new look to any room. It is also less expensive than buying ready made curtains.
Step #1 Measure Windows
Standard finished curtain length is 84 inches. To achieve standard length, add at least 10 inches for a length of 94 inches unfinished. This is because you will want 4 inch folds at the top and bottom for weight and stability (1 inch tucked under to hide the unfinished edge). If you want curtains shorter or longer than standard length, measure from the height of the rod to the floor or bottom of window sill. Then, add 10 inches. Once you know how much fabric you’ll need, you can begin to fabric shop.
Step #2 Select & Buy Fabric
Obviously, the best part of sewing your own things is picking out the fabric! My advice on curtains is to notice what colors are already present in the room. For instance, my mom’s sitting room has a dark gray stone fireplace and sky blue walls. We wanted to be able to bring these two stark elements together, and so chose a mostly white fabric with a mosaic blue and brownish gray pattern.
The best place to shop for home decor fabric near me is Joann Fabric Store. You can order online or pick up in store, and will also be able to make sure they have enough fabric on hand for your project. You may need to buy from multiple locations if your project is large. Here is a direct link to the fabric in this tutorial: Indigo Levrone by Home Essentials.
There’s also an incredible website where you can upload your own designs and order custom fabric for your needs. If you are that creative – you’re amazing if you are – check out Spoonflower.
Step #3 Cut Fabric
Use a rotary blade and cutting mat to make quick work of cutting fabric. Remember, measure twice, cut once.Â
Add Lining – If the fabric you selected is thin, you may want to add a lining. Lining is very affordable, as low as $1 per yard. Press the outside edges in a half inch, and tuck the lining right inside.
Note: Use pins to keep everything tucked in nicely.
Step #4 Iron
Making your own curtains is equal parts sewing and ironing. A well pressed curtain will be so easy to sew.
Step #5 Sew
Use a straight stitch. Curtains take a lot of thread, so you may want to wind extra bobbins. Use a matching or neutral thread color such as white, black, or brown. Double fold unfinished edges.
Step #6 Add Details
One to three pleats can be used on curtains designed to be hung on rings. Be sure to include pleat measurements in your initial cuts. For curtains that go directly on the rod, sew one inch down from the top to create a bunched effect when they are closed.
Note: Single pleats shown here are 4 inches apart, 3/4 inch thick.
Notes on How to Make Curtains
Making your own curtains is ultimate freedom in redecorating any space and is also more affordable than having custom drapes made by someone else. The right tools are helpful, notably an iron, self-healing mat, rotary blade, and straight pins. Determine which details you’d like to add and be sure to include those in your measurements.

Thank you Angela! The fabric is from Joann’s. I ordered the fabric online, and had to pick up from a few different stores to get enough for this project. I hope you are able to find enough, we are really happy with these curtains!
